The Lighthouse Inc. 1893

Founded in 1893 by Esther Kelly, who began making a five-mile trip each week from her home to teach Sunday school to children in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood, The Lighthouse is the oldest nonprofit in the city of Philadelphia. For over 130 years, The Lighthouse has served the Kensington, Fairhill, and North Philadelphia communities, providing educational, recreational, and economic improvement programs to families and individuals to affect positive change and improve quality of life. The organization operates a Community Center and a Sports & Entertainment Complex offering youth sports including baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, and field hockey, along with camps and community events — all in a safe and welcoming space for kids and families. Through its Champion Program, membership fees flow 100% directly into programs, supporting year-round sports leagues, education programs, and community events that serve over 3,000 Philadelphians annually.
