Soccer Unity Project

Soccer Unity Project traces its roots to 2008, when the organization (then known as South End Soccer) launched free soccer programming for youth on fields in Boston’s Roxbury and South End neighborhoods. In 2018, the organization launched the Boston Unity Cup, a citywide celebration bringing together the many cultures and immigrant communities that make Boston a global city. Following a two-year strategic planning process, the organization rebranded as Soccer Unity Project in 2022, uniting South End Soccer, the Boston Unity Cup, and additional programming under one mission-driven nonprofit that reimagines the power of soccer to build community, connect people from diverse backgrounds, and promote equity in youth play. SUP works to change the culture of youth soccer from a pay-to-play model with a history of systemic racism and gender inequality to one that welcomes and develops urban youth regardless of background or experience, now serving more than 1,200 youth annually ages 5-19 — 80% from Chinatown, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roxbury, and the South End, 42% female, and 67% youth of color. In 2024, the organization relaunched TOPSoccer and partnered with Special Olympics to establish Boston’s first community-based Unified soccer team for athletes of all abilities.
