South Bronx United

South Bronx United was founded in 2009 by Andrew So, then a mathematics and special education teacher at a public secondary school in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx, together with his wife Steph. What began as an after-school soccer group grew into a comprehensive youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change, helping youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community, and beyond. SBU’s programming spans a competitive and recreational soccer academy, academic support and college preparation, workforce training, and immigration legal services — including Know Your Rights forums and case management that has helped nearly 40 previously undocumented youth gain legal permanent residency. Today, SBU reaches roughly 1,900 youth and families annually ages 2-24 across 48 weeks of programming, with SBU Academy graduates posting a 100% high school graduation rate and 94% college matriculation rate, nearly three times the college readiness rate of their South Bronx peers. The organization received the prestigious Laureus Sport for Good Award in 2020.
